The Issue
About 8.3 million, children in the United States live with at least one parent who is in need of treatment for alcohol or drug dependency. Additionally, 1 in 4 children are impacted by addiction. These children are at significantly higher risk for:
- mental illness or emotional problems, such as depression or anxiety
- physical health problems
- developing learning problems, including difficulty with cognitive and verbal skills, conceptual reasoning and abstract thinking
- being placed in foster care
- doing poorly in school
- using/abusing drugs or alcohol as an adult
The Reality
- 56% of Glad House children live with a single mother
- 30% live with an extended family member
- 7% are in foster care
- 5% live with a mother and father
- 73% have a dual diagnosed mother (mental illness and addiction)
- 52% are a child protective case
