The Issue

About 8.3 million, children in the United States live with at least one parent who is in need of treatment for alcohol or drug dependency. Additionally,  1 in 4 children are impacted by addiction.  These children are at significantly higher risk for:

  • mental illness or emotional problems, such as depression or anxiety
  • physical health problems
  • developing learning problems, including difficulty with cognitive and verbal skills, conceptual reasoning and abstract thinking
  • being placed in foster care
  • doing poorly in school
  • using/abusing drugs or alcohol as an adult

The Reality

  • 56% of Glad House children live with a single mother
  • 30% live with an extended family member
  • 7% are in foster care
  • 5% live with a mother and father
  • 73% have a dual diagnosed mother (mental illness and addiction)
  • 52% are a child protective case
